CULTURE | BAY ISLAND SURNAMES

Have you ever wondered by the Bay Islands of Honduras natives have such different surnames from those of mainlanders?

It's simple: The mainland was conquered by the Spanish and the Bay Islands were colonized by the British.

Although these islands were given back by Her Majesty Queen Victoria of England to Honduras after a long dispute with the United States over colonizing any more territory in the Americas, many English people refused to leave the islands regardless of being offered to move to the Cayman Islands with deeds for land the queen had given them. This is the main reason you will find islands who primarily speak English and have English first names and surnames.
